Maman and me combines imagery of hair, brushing, braiding, spiders, knives, scissors, and cut paper derived from my interest in the work of Louise Bourgeois and my collaboration with Thea Yabut. The work utilizes both “blind cutting” and cameraless animation: processes of the 20th century avant-garde designed to allow for open-ended material exploration and creation of meanings. A pair of fighting spiders move across the screen for the duration of the film: a metaphor for collaboration and intergenerational exchange – both in the tensions and connection points inherent in feminist lineage of artmaking through the last century.

Conceived and edited by Anthea Black, with cameraless animation and performance footage in collaboration with Thea Yabut.
